Recipe Background

Caramelized Onions are a great accompaniment for burgers, brats or hot dogs. They do take about 20 minutes to make, but you can make them earlier in the day and just re-heat when you want to serve them. The type of pan you use may affect the browning that you achieve. I prefer to use an enameled cast iron pan when making these but you can also use a non-stick pan. Try these for your next cook-out!

Caramelized Onions

1 teaspoon light olive oil
1 teaspoon salted butter
1 large onion

Heat the olive oil and butter, over low heat, in a medium saucepan until melted. Thickly slice the onions and cut slices into quarters. Place the onions into the saucepan. Continue to cook over low heat for about 20 minutes until the onions are a light brown color, but not burned. These can be made earlier in the day and reheated. They are great to serve with hamburgers, brats, or hot dogs.
